Spray Can Storage Slider

Spray paint and other aerosol cans seem to proliferate throughout the shop. They take up valuable space, and it is sometimes hard to find what you need when you need it. After dealing with this for years, I finally came up with a solution.

I use a lot of 15 quart Sterilite storage bins for bulky items, and have a few grids I have built to store them. One is on an upper shelf near the ceiling.

I mounted a piece of Unistrut to the top, so that the bottom of the strut didn’t block access to the top row, then built a sliding door that is the height of the case, and half as wide. I added some strut trolleys to the top of the door and filled the door with some 3D printed holders that I modified from a design I found.

This worked fine, but the bottom of the shelf was flopping around, so I made a lower support from a 1″ bearing and some 1/8″ flat bar.

This kept everything stable and allowed it to easily slide across the length of the strut, allowing access to both sides of my container grid.

Here it is loaded up with paint and other spray cans. It has been great to have all of this visible, accessible, and not really taking up any space.
