I have a bunch of extension cords, hoses, and such that I don’t use every day, but I want them easily accessible when I do need them. The normal answer is to hang them on a hook on the wall, but I don’t have much wall space available. I had a section of wall about 1′ wide and 3′ high near the door next to my hose reel, and I came up with this.
I took a piece of 1/4″ hitch receiver tubing and welded shims inside so that a piece of standard P1000 Unistrut would be a slip fit through it. Then I built a wall bracket from some 1″x1/8″ C channel. The 2 brackets are linked with a piece of 1/4″x2″ flat bar. I then welded some strut trolleys to a 4′ scrap of 1/2″x2″ 16g rectangular tubing, and after mounting the bracket assembly to the wall, added in the strut and the slider bar.
Some crudely bent 1/4″ round bar gave me some hooks to hang cords by.
It handles the load pretty well, and I can slide it all back against the wall so doesn’t stick out so much. A PTO pin at the end of the strut keeps the rolling bar from sliding out the end.
I’ve been pretty happy with this. It keeps a 10 gallon tub, bucket, welder extension cord, air and water hoses, and several other similar items out of the way and yet still handy.
